Million Dollar Networking: The Sure Way To Find, Keep And Grow Your Business (Capital Business)

Keeping Your Growing Network Organized

Maybe you have the social aspect of networking figured out. You attend the right functions, keep your eyes open, meet great people, and connect well. You may even have several business cards that you can refer to if you ever need something. Sooner or later, however, you will find that, in order to network effectively, you need to keep your contacts organized. I divide my list into three different categories: A, B and C, and I follow up accordingly.

  1. My "C" list consists of "touch base" people. These are acquaintances whom I want in my network. However, I am not involved with them on a business or personal level. I follow up with them by sending:
    • My quarterly newsletter with a short personal note
    • A card or note once or twice a year
    • A holiday card in December

  2. My "B" list consists of "associates." These are people who I am actively involved with, either professionally or personally. I follow up with them in several ways:
    • Meet each of them for a meal, tea, or coffee at least 2 times a year
    • Send at least six personal notes in a year
    • Give them holiday and premium gifts

  3. Finally, my "A" list is for "close friends and associates." I follow up with these people frequently in many different ways:
    • See each of them personally at least four times in a year
    • Send them special gifts and frequent personal notes
    • Actively look for and send them articles of interest
    • Look for opportunities to send them flowers, theater tickets or dinner certificates

These categories provide a great framework for organizing and following up with your growing network. This way, you can effectively follow up with everyone on your list, from your closest friends to the person you see only on rare occasions.

Testimonials

Hi Jay,
The event last night was great.  I have been to other networking events, but this one had many qualities that made it better than others I have been to, such as, good name tags with clips as opposed to the usual stickers that fall off; good venue sitting in back area of diner where we had space, tables, lighting; nice touch with buffet with pasta and soft drinks; good acoustics so everyone could hear each other without shouting; good organization of event including microphone reminders of when to switch and also write-in sheets for taking notes; good geographic location in the city near Penn Station which is convenient for everyone. I'll definitely be coming back!

Jay,

Hi. I just wanted to drop you a line to mention how well I think your
networking function ran last night. I met some very interesting people, and
I think that's the crux of a successful networking event. Hopefully, new
relationships will turn into new business. Please keep me posted with your
schedule for your upcoming events.

Jay,

I just wanted to say thank you again for hosting these events. I know from personal experience that results do come from meeting people in this format.  I  was able to pick up a client after attending only one event and I am confident that business will also come from the second.  I plan on attending more events in the future.

Thanks,
